MAAP Training Jersey Review

MAAP Training Jersey Review

The MAAP Training Jersey is a great all-rounder of a top, proficient at wicking and breathing whether worn on its own or under layers.

This jersey is a bit of a do-all, a daily wearer that works alone, under or even over other stuff. What differentiates a 'training' jersey from a 'race' jersey?  Well, there aren't any hard and fast rules, but generally speaking, a race jersey will use high-end fabrics strategically placed for optimal performance – aerodynamics, venting – and they cost a small fortune. A training jersey is a version of how to be more durable for use every day and less expensive.  MAAP's Training Jersey follows this approach, yet still feels like a race jersey.

Up front is a small MAAP logo and full-length zip that’s easy to use with one hand. Out back are three standard pockets (no zip pocket), a pinwheel of MAAP logos, and some reflective bits. The two outer pockets are angled at the top for easier access and can hold heaps of gear securely. A sturdy waistband with grippers keeps everything in place and supports the pocket contents so the gear weight isn’t hanging off your shoulders.

On the bike the fit is tight enough to stop the jersey material from flapping in the wind but not constrictive thanks to the stretch. The closed material helps achieve the SPF50+ rating and breathability is okay but not as good as a mesh jersey. The full zip is great for dumping heat but the tight fit restricts airflow around the torso. The result is a jersey that’s comfortable in a wide range of temperatures but not ideal for the hottest days.

Why MAAP Training Jerseys are Fit for Bikes?

What people like the most is the modern elbow-length sleeves and while there are no grippers there’s minimal riding up. The front waist is a moderate cut that’s long enough to cover everything when standing but short enough to not bunch up when you’re bent over the bars. The waistband is the most restrictive part of the jersey so be mindful of the Waist measurement when choosing a size.

The jersey is simple with one material throughout that’s thin, stretchy, and silky soft on the skin. Lots of color options and the contrast stitching add character to the otherwise color jerseys. The generous stretch should fit different-shaped bodies well but while not see-through the tight fit and thin material leaves little to the imagination. The fit is almost aero but not as aggressive as the cut. It has long arms and a close cut but traditional seam placement and lots of stretch, so you don’t feel restricted. As mentioned, it’s a bit shorter than most so watch out if you have a longer torso.

Love the material – it doesn’t feel stretchy thin. It hugs the body and as it’s recycled you can feel better about buying it.

Value

The asking price of £130 puts it up there with offerings from other designer brands.

Alternatively, the Gore Distance Jersey Men's is £119.99 and similar in terms of material and qualities, though it isn't available in brighter colours.

Overall

You will be impressed with this jersey. Breathability is good, wicking is excellent, and it works with layers or by itself. It comes up shorter than others, but it's a MAAP and that's now par for the course – if both that and the premium price work for you, this will serve you well.
